Joseph was born in St. Pancras in 1894,
the son of James Barley, an undertaker, and Emma (nee Povey).
In a letter sent by Jospeh to his mother in 1861 from
Bangalore, he says :- "I had been busy all day and was playing
at the Bowring Club just until ten oclock pm."
