Stanley  was born in Stockwell, Surrey in 1875, son of William de Wilde Cater, an army contractor born in India, and Alexandrina Mary (nee Dwight) born in Pimlico.

Occupation - Insurance Inspector.
Previous service - Queens Westminster - 7 years.
Service - East Surrey Regt. No.1200. 14 Apr 1914 
               4/1st Cambridgeshire Regt, C coy. - transferred 15 Apr 1916
               1/6th Norfolk Regt. No.225493 - transferred 23 Jul 1917
               25th Bn London Regt. No.741387 - transferred 14 Jan 1918.
               att. Home Defence Army Cycle Corp.
Demobilised - 12 Jan 1919

It would appear from the service record and the lack of a medal card that Stanley did not serve overseas.
