 Charles John DAVIS



Charles was born on the 9th of April 1895 in Stratford Bow (baptised 12 May 1896 at St. Mary Stratford Bow), the son of William, a warehouseman, & Mary Jane (nee Stewart / Stuart). In the 1911 census Charles is recorded as being a Stock Broker's Clerk.

Charles married Suzanne Marie Mathilde Guyon-Messager at St.Michaels and All Angels Church in Walthamstow on the 8th of Sept. 1923.

The five embroideries were sewn by Charles whilst in India when he became very very ill, and ended up in hospital where he was helped to do embroidery by the local memsahibs.

Background: Davis, C J. Enlisted on 31 Aug 1914 in the 25th Cyclists Battalion, County of London Regiment. After coastal defence duties in Sussex and Norfolk, he arrived in India in Feb 1916 and served on the North-West Frontier, seeing action in the Waziristan Campaign, 1917, the Amritsar Riots, 1919, and the Afghan War, 1919. Discharged from the army on Armistice Day 1919.
