Henry Gilbertson SMITH (later by deed poll - Henry GILBERTON-SMITH)


 
Henry was the son of Gilberton SMITH.

The 25th London address book lists his address as "Highlands, Brentwood". 

Medal Card - (1) M.G.C - Lieut. (2) 2/25th Lond. - Lieut. Served in France from 4/16. Address - Highlands, Brentwood, Essex.

1915 Oct 29. Presumed date of commission

1917 Apr 29. 2nd Lt. H. G. Smith to be Lt , with precedence as from 1st June 1916 , and to remain seconded .

1918 Jun 17. He changes his name by deed poll from "Henry Gilbertson Smith " to " Henry Gilbertson-Smith"

1918 Jun 24. MC Gazetted " Lt. Henry Gilbertson Smith, Lond.R., attd, M.G. Corps. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of two machine guns during an enemy attack. Then the infantry near him were driven back on to his position he showed splendid leadership in assisting to rally them and formed a strong point. He kept his guns in action, holding up the enemy’s attack for over six hours, and thus enabled the troops in rear to consolidate a defensive position. It was largely owing to his courage and determination under heavy fire that a difficult situation was restored

1920 Dec 6. Joined The Auxiliary Division of the Royal Irish Constabulary (ADRIC) with service no 1175. Posted to B Coy.

1921 Jun 12. He was promoted Section Leader

1922 Jan 23. Discharged on the demobilisation of the ADRIC

1926 Married (his first wife died in 1931) and 1932 married again

1939 - WW2

  • Commanding Officer 41st Anti-Aircraft Brigade
  • Commanding Officer 27th Anti-Aircraft Brigade
  • Commanding Officer 303rd Brigade

1977 Jul 23. Died Brentwood, Essex
