This is the gate that divides centrally governed Pakistan from the tribal homelands area on the road from Peshawar to the Khyber Pass. From this point on you can only travel with a military guard (plus rifle) on board, and the road is heavily policed in case local skirmishes, which are apparently frequent, spill over onto the road and block the traffic.
